How do you crisis manage remotely?
The quick answer is, you don’t – you let your vendor handle it so you can focus on your business.
For many companies and individuals it was a crash course in how to work from home when the Corona crisis hit the world. The use of Microsoft Teams increased with 775% within a few weeks and from one day to the other employees had to learn to collaborate remotely.
Companies had to act swiftly and establish secure ways to access company networks from the outside and managers woke up to a reality where employees where suddenly a video on a screen and a voice in a speaker.
For many companies this in itself is a challenge – a situation where the prepared has a very welcome upper hand and where one sees the true value of timely risk and contingency planning.
The nature of CrossWorkers business, where we have a large offshore Development Center in Cairo and sales and part of the management in Europe, also gave other challenges. 2/3 of the top management was in Europe and with no possibilities to get onsite in Cairo. Crises management was there from the very beginning something that was done remotely with a geographical distance of 3000 KM.
Though it might have complicated things for the average organization, CrossWorkers benefited from a very long experience in running business remotely and was not slowed down. The value of many years of experience of working remotely between Europe and our office in Cairo and the efforts made in having management and middle management working with initiative and independence was harvested instantly.
At CrossWorkers we had both the upper hand and we came prepared. Yes, we had our contingency plans and processes but foremost we had a management group who stepped into new roles immediately. Communication tools where not only at hand in large scale but also the integrated use of them.
When handling crises like the Corona crises across countries one will soon experience that things like culture, perception and different stages of reality also plays an important factor. With a deep understanding of both the European as well as the Egyptian situation and context CrossWorkers was able to address matter for all relevant groups in the right priority in a way where challenges where addressed, and information provided for both customers and employees. Again, it is a natural way for CrossWorkers to work but for customers running an offshore/nearshore/out staffed setup, and not having the true understanding across the countries, and not having the support from an organization truly understanding the onshore context, it can soon be an unpleasant challenge. It just underlines the importance of working with a vendor who understand both the offshore as well as the onshore side of things.
