Risk is a matter of knowledge – NOT perception

jun 25, 2018

When dealing in the world of IT outsourcing/IT Offshoreing you often get asked about the safety and security in the Offshore country.  It is naturally a very relevant point to investigate.  Based on my experience from Pakistan, Ukraine and Egypt I have often seen that the risk evaluation is very much based on a preconceived opinion and not facts.  It is human nature that we feel that the environment close to us are more safe than an unknown environment but as a professional decision maker one must look pas this – look at facts.

A small anecdote from years back illustrate this very well. At the time I was working with Pakistan and it was relative often that there where different bomb explosions in Pakistan.  At the same time, the Danish police made the decision to remove tom young people from a house in Copenhagen that they had unrightfully occupied – this caused street fighting in a few streets surrounding the house.  I received a phone call from our Pakistani CEO in Islamabad asking “are you OK in Copenhagen”  He was watching CNN and had the impression that we had riots all over Copenhagen and he was really nervous for our safety.  It illustrates very well that perception and reality does not always go hand in hand.

When it comes to Cairo, Egypt I also from time to time talk with potential customers that have a risky picture of Cairo – reality is very different and is now backed up by Gallup in their 2018 Law and Order report.  When it comes to personal safety and crime Egypt, actually rank higher than both Western and Eastern Europe as regions – on country comparison countries like UK, USA Sweden rank lower. Only Slovenia and Uzbekistan from the East European region can match Egypt. Don’t trust perception – trust facts.
